The documentarian told his story of the long hike through the giant trail.

A filmmaker recently made a stop in Bucks county to discuss one of his works, which documented his long hike through the Appalachian Trail.

Thaddeus Lamar recently spoke at an event at The Newtown Theatre that covered his documentary “Barbarian Utopia: Encounters on the Appalachian Trail”. Covering his journey back in 2014, Lamar brought his film equipment to document his journey through the entire Appalachian Trail, a journey of some 2,185 miles.

“Bringing several digital cameras, he captured an adventure that proved to be as intense and grueling as it was ultimately rewarding,” the theatre said online. “Over 100 other hikers also shared their stories of adventure, hardship, and camaraderie. What emerged is a 91-minute documentary about a great American resource, the history behind it, and the community that surrounds it.”

The title of his documentary came from a 1921 article by Benton MacKaye, which discussed the possibility of a trail running through the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine.

“The Appalachian Range should…become the site for a Barbarian Utopia,” MacKaye said over 100 years ago.
