Local Author Discusses the Storied History of the Founder of the Bucks County Historical Society

W.W.H. Davis is the author of the "History of Bucks County".

Research for a book led one local writer to more information on the life of W.W.H. Davis, the founder of the Bucks County Historical Society. Author Carl LaVO discussed Davis’s fascinating life in the Bucks County Courier Times.

Born in Upper Southampton to the man whom Davisville is named after, Davis grew up in Doylestown. The founder of the area’s historical society, he authored the thorough “History of Bucks County” in 1876. His research into the area is still used by writers and historian to this day.

Davis was a veteran of the War in Mexico, where he administered New Mexico for a period of four years. It was during this time that he wrote “El Gringo, or New Mexico and Her People” and founded the Santa Fe Gazette, which published articles in English and Spanish.

Authoring 10 books on the history of the area, Davis rests in the Doylestown Cemetery, where he was interred in 1910. Known to many as “the patron saint of Doylestown,” Davis’s legacy continues to point people in the direction of Doylestown from near and far.
