By focusing on sunlight and perspective, Newtown artist Judy LaTorre brings local architecture to life with vibrant watercolors, writes Michele Malinchak for the Bucks County Magazine.

“My objective is to capture the architecture and landscapes of Bucks County in a glowing warm light,” said LaTorre.

Her work can be considered a balance of realism and impressionism. She fills her paintings with fine details but she also captures the mood of her subjects through light. While her subjects vary from sun-dappled sidewalks and covered bridges to weathered barns, her paintings always radiate a warmth that can almost be felt.

LaTorre has been painting with watercolors exclusively for nearly three decades. She has always been drawn by their softness and transparent quality and over the years, she has mastered the technique that allows the light to shine through the paint.

“I can’t paint without warm light,” she said.

Her work is displayed in public and private collections in both Bucks County and Philadelphia, such as the Tyler Estate on the campus of Bucks County Community College. Her work has also been included in several juried exhibits, including at Phillips’ Mill and The Philadelphia Sketch Club.
