Bucks County’s Employment See Saw: Where Were Its Ups and Downs Most Volatile?

Bucks County firms were noted for their recent hiring of new employees and downsizing of existing employees.

The Philadelphia Business Journal has compiled a list of greater Phila. public companies gaining and losing the greatest number of employees last year. Reporter Ryan Mulligan provided the details.

The tabulation yielded 20 firms with the biggest swings in human resources, identifying enterprises that did the most hiring in 2021 and those that downsized to the greatest degree in the same period.

Bad news first: In Bucks County proper, the data revealed the top employee-roll trimmer as Healthcare Services Group of Bensalem. It saw an 11 percent reduction in its workforce, affecting 5,000 employees. The total payroll now covers 39,200 people.

Just outside the county borders, Allentown’s PPL also received unwanted attention for positions cut. It lost 6,711 (54 percent) of staffers, yielding a present workforce of 5,600.

On the upside, EPAM Systems Inc., Newtown, showed healthy growth, onboarding 17,656 new faces, a lift of 43 percent. It’s development software human resources now number 58,824.

Air Products & Chemicals in neighboring Allentown saw an 8 percent increase in workers as 1,600 newbies were welcomed. The company’s number of wage earners presently sits at 20,875.
