Electric Bike Technologies, Inc. (EBT), Croydon, is donating 20 battery-powered bikes to youngsters diagnosed with Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and other physical challenges. Each recipient received a model from the company’s Liberty Trike line.

The donation outreach started in 2019, at the request of a mom wanting to give her daughter a commonly enjoyed childhood experience: cycling.

Kimberly Heinrich emailed the company asking about an electric trike to help her daughter Allison, diagnosed with SMA. She saw the equipment as having two purposes: provide a unique physical therapy opportunity and give her daughter an independent way to go on family rides.

The cycle was a game changer.

“When she’s on the trike, she’s just a different kid,” Heinrich said. “She’s not the kid on a mobility scooter or wheelchair. She feels like everyone else.”

“As a father of three young children myself, this was an easy decision,” said Jason Kraft, EBT CEO, commenting on the manufacturer’s initial donation. “Liberty Trike was originally designed with senior riders in mind, but once we saw how Liberty could benefit these kids and their families, we had to make this happen.”
