Stacks Booksmith, Quakertown, an appropriately named bookseller recommended by Phila. Magazine.

The fierce cold snap that has gripped Bucks County for much of January can be mitigated by a few comforts: a warm sweater, a robust coffee, a crackling fireplace and … an e-reader?!? Absolutely not. The serenity of a few quiet hours of wintertime literary indulgence simply demands an old-fashioned, paper-based, bookmark-required book. And Philadelphia Magazine‘s Patrick Rapa’s recommendation of Stacks Booksmith is a prime place to stock up.

Stacks, in the Quakertown Farmers’ Market, is a relative newcomer to the local book scene, opening in May 2021.

According to its Facebook page, it seeks to celebrate “all things paper-based.” In addition to a massive collection of books, the shop sells old photos, magazines, manuals, advertising, post cards, playbills, and posters.

“One of the greatest treasures are items made of paper,” posted Ann Meredith, co-owner. “Paper is so fragile and yet has been the constant companion for sharing news, stories, communicating, and marking events for over 5,000 years.

“We are excited to welcome all paper collectors, enthusiasts, lovers, admirers, dilettantes, aficionados and devotees to join the hunt for your unicorn, golden ticket, holy grail, Atlantis, pot of gold or long-lost treasure at Stacks.”
