Your first day at a new job is stressful enough just trying to adjust to all the new tasks you need to learn. But you can’t become so caught up in that aspect of the job that you forget that you need to build connections with your new coworkers too.

How you handle the introduction can vary quite a bit depending on your position and the size of the company. For a small office where you are just starting out in your career, casually meeting and greeting as you run into people throughout the day could be fine. A small team is not likely to be too formal.

However, for a larger company where you might not even be encountering a lot of your coworkers face to face, the dynamic changes. If you are in a managerial position, an email sent out to the team introducing yourself and giving some of your background can be the most efficient method.

It can also feel ungainly trying to figure out how to talk with people who you have no urgent need to interact with for any immediate purpose, but who are important to the company overall. In some cases, it can help things go more smoothly to ask someone to make the introduction for you, just to make sure you are on each other’s radar.

Sometimes companies will facilitate the need for introductions on their own by holding orientations for a lot of new hires at once. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know others in a format designed for it. It can be a bit overwhelming to have a bunch of names thrown at you all at once, but ice breakers like this can spare you confusion later on.

Ultimately, the tactic you go with will also hinge on the culture of the company. Some businesses are more formal and you need to be able to read the room. It is fine to take some time to assess the atmosphere of the office, but don’t allow yourself to start passing the same faces every day without knowing who they are.
