Robots Serve at Media Senior Community Center

By

Jacquelin DeFilippo was accustomed to great service at Wesley Enhanced Living Main Line (WEL) in Media Borough from the human staff. Now she’s adding a robot to the list, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

“R2-D2, we named him,” she joked.

WEL hired two computerized staff members about a month ago.

The “Matradee Robots” by Richtech Robotics use smart technology so they navigate through the dining hall without hitting anything.

It’s tough for servers who have to carry out hot plates and avoid obstacles like walkers, said DeFilippo. “The robots just come up and they come to the right table and then the servers just put it on our table.”

Residents find the Matradee Robots charming.

“I look forward to coming down to dinner just to see it,” said Rose Powers. “My birthday will be coming up and I can’t wait to hear it sing Happy Birthday.”

The robots have helped with the recent staff shortages.

WEL Executive Director Mike DeStefon thinks robots will be part of future senior care.

“You’re going to see a progression of these types of things in the industry that are going to push for a more efficient and streamlined way to provide service,” he said.
