Mehmet Oz, Montgomery County Pennsylvania Senate candidate better known as television personality Dr. Oz, does not want to be referred to by his real first and last name during the campaign, writes Summer Concepcion for the Talking Points Memo.

Oz, who is running in the statewide political field with a registered Bryn Athyn address, went on Fox News to complain about The Philadelphia Inquirer’s decision to refer to him as Mehmet Oz in print. The candidate claims it results in his being “silenced.”

The comment comes after Inquirer columnist Jeffrey Barg cited the decision from the paper’s style committee earlier this month.

In the column, Barg argued that referring to the celebrity doctor as “Dr. Oz” presents ethical issues as it “bestows status, authority, and honor.” This would give Oz an edge in a competitive race, the publication believes.

Barg also emphasized that Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and author, is not the only doctor running. Montgomery County Board of Commissioners Chair Val Arkoosh is also a physician, but the paper refers to her by her first and last name in headlines.
