Amtrak continues to sift survey data in consideration looking additional rail service connections to/from Pennsylvania. Proposed passenger lines include Allentown/New York City and Philadelphia/Reading, writes Cody Butler for PA Homepage.

The plans are the result of the railroad’s summer study with Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority.

Now local residents are welcoming the news of the possible new lines.

“The roads get quite congested and it’s a nightmare,” said Kirk Mull of Birdsboro. “Not everyone can just hop in a car and go. And a train would be a viable option.”

“I think for small businesses it’s a very good idea because it brings them the economy that they need,” said Nadine Gannon of Lake Wallenpaupack.

Overall, the study is looking to improve 25 existing routes and add 39 new ones. The additional lines would reach 160 communities in the country.

The study is expected to be completed soon, with Congress’ infrastructure bill set to play a significant role in getting it chugging.
