It’s looking a lot rosier in 2022 for American Airlines’ Philadelphia hub when it comes to European travel. In fact, the airline projects the summer of 2022 will look a lot like the pre-pandemic days of summer 2019, writes Catherine Dunn for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Everybody who didn’t go to Rome in 2020, in 2021, now they’re really eager to go to Rome,” said Brian Znotins, American’s vice president of network planning. “We expect two years of pent-up demand to all fall into 2022.″

American will add PHL European travel routes to Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Madrid, and Rome in March, with more of the schedule announced in the coming weeks.

Philadelphia will continue to be American’s transatlantic gateway “for the foreseeable future,” Znotins said.

Delivery delays from Boeing on new aircraft from safety inspections will still create a lower level of flying than American would like, Znotins said.

American was slated to get 14 787s. It only got one.

Znotins said travelers should expect “ a lot more demand” than what American can now offer in capacity. That means “the lowest-fare seats are going to sell quickly.”
