Former New York Steamfitter Launches Fiery Spice Company, Wah Gwan, From His New Hope Kitchen
In March 2020, as the pandemic raged, Marcus Davis climbed down from his Big Apple scaffold, hung up his steamfitter’s career, and launched a culinary business, Wah Gwan, from his New Hope home. Marilyn Johnson covered his zesty transition — made with his wife, Rose —for Philly Grub.
Davis and his wife, Rose, now run Wah Gwan, an online supplier of luxury seasonings. The title translates from its Jamaican patois roots as “What’s going on?”
His idea for Wah Gwan arose from a pandemic-related upswing in home cooking.
“Historically, there has been a resistance to cooking at home,” Davis said. “Our all-purpose seasoning is the solution — one product that brings a ton of flavor [and simplifies] dinner.”
The brand’s three varieties are the namesake seasoning, a French-import salt, and a dried Scotch Bonnet powder featuring a pepper base.
The Davis’ have clearly connected over food. And they’re eager to build the same bridges for others.
Rose explained that she and Marcus “…quickly realized that what people are craving — besides access to delicious, fresh food — are experiences within their community and actually breaking bread with friends and loved ones.
“We’ve found incredible joy in helping people up-level their cooking. And we couldn’t be happier about the fact that we’re doing this together,” she concluded.
