Phoenixville native Maddie Cooke, who swam collegiately at Penn State, recently won the women’s division at the Barnegat Light Ocean Mile Swim in New Jersey, writes David Biggy for The SandPaper.

Cooke, a Phoenixville High School grad, participates in several lifeguard events as a member of the Barnegat Light Beach Patrol, which is both the beneficiary and host of the annual race.

Her goal during the race was simple: to pass as many people as possible and approach the front of the pack.

“I just wanted to have fun and do my best for Barnegat Light,” she said.

The plan worked. She clocked a time of 21:32.34, which, in addition to securing her first place in the women’s division, put her in 13th place overall.

“It wasn’t too bad out there,” said Cooke. “I had enough space to pass people. I just wanted to get as close to the top as I could and get those points for BL (Barnegat Light).”
