Hammering Out a Summer Day Trip’s Details: Local Natural Attraction Gains a Ringing Endorsement
With the July 4 holiday now in the rear-view mirror, the seasonal chant from Bucks County kids is assuredly near: I’m bored. Countering with a proposed day trip may be just the answer. Ali Lanyon covered a very conveniently located one for WHTM 27 News, Harrisburg.
Ringing Rocks Park, in Upper Black Eddy, is 123 acres of open ground whose most striking feature (sorry!) is a large bolder field.
Visitors wend their way across it, hammers in hand, pinging rocks and producing musical tones.
“It’s really cool,” says Gail Hill from the Bucks County Department of Recreation. “The rocks ring like bells. Not all of them. But a lot of them.”
Hill says the resonance comes from the after-effects of the ice age. Two million years ago, ice compressed the geography to our north, forcing rock formations to Bucks and Montgomery Counties. The rock piles, with their numerous gaps, have just enough room to resonate when struck.
“It’s actually really cool. They sound almost like metal,” Landon of Williams Township said. “People are intrigued by it, which they should be. I mean, the rocks in your yard don’t ring.”
More on these mineral musical instruments is at WHTM 27 News.
