All Aboard! Three of the Nation’s 10 Best Scenic Train Rides Are Right in Our Backyard
While the nation is filled with gorgeous vistas best enjoyed by train, some routes stand out purely because of the stunning landscapes that they offer. Two of them are not nearby, according to new rankings by USA Today.
The railroads cited were hand-picked by a panel of travel experts and then voted on by the publication’s readers to select the best scenic rides in the country.
The Colebrookdale Railroad, connecting Boyertown to Pottstown, was the highest ranked in Pennsylvania at No 3. Winding its way through “Pennsylvania’s Secret Valley,” the ride offers settings that range from plush (in Victorian-era restored passenger cars) to rustic (open-air cars that, in autumn, offer haybale seating).
The Wilmington & Western Railroad in Delaware ranked No. 9. The route was laid in the 1870s, and today, it hosts one of the East Coast’s most popular tourist railroads. Excursions through Red Clay Valley start at Greenbank and then continue on through Faulkland, Wooddale, Ashland, Yorklyn, and Hockessin.
Meanwhile, Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster County placed 10th. This historic line was founded in 1832; however, it did not become a tourist attraction until 1958. Now, passengers flock to grab a seat to travel on these trains just for the chance to enjoy the enchanting views of Lancaster County.
