They served our nation, faced dangers untold, and sacrificed mightily. In return, veterans nationwide often face homelessness for reasons that can include addiction, unemployment, and physical and emotional handicap. 

The problem is especially dire in Bucks County, which has the fourth-largest veteran population in Pennsylvania. 

In response, the county opened a new, 40-unit affordable housing residence in Bensalem. It is targeted toward those who served and to seniors who are aged 62 and older. 

“So many people worked hard on this project for years,” said County Commissioner Gene DiGirolamo at the opening. “But the real stars today and every day are the veterans, the brave men and women who served.” 

Through private and community partners, the $15-million project became a reality. 

The county provided $1.65 million in federal HOME grant funding, and Bensalem Township donated the land for the three-story, 39,673 square feet facility. The Bucks County Housing Authority matched the county’s financial backing; it will also provide housing vouchers moving forward, ensuring that residents can stay put as needed. 

“The most important thing we see today is partnership between private sector and government,” said Dan Fraley, Director of Bucks County Department of Military Affairs. He vowed to the first residents (three veterans and two seniors): “We’re here for you.”
