A cement sailboat abandoned at D&S Marina in Tullytown has a new owner who is documenting the rehabilitation in a YouTube video series, Float Jawn, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Amede Bennett got the 1974 sailboat that is docked in the Delaware River from Craigslist. The price was the main driving point for the impulse acquisition – the vessel was being offered for free.
When Bennett looked at the boat, they saw the hull was rusted, the roof of the cabin leaked, and the engine did not work. To top it all, Bennett had no sail-boating experience. But none of that mattered.
“To be honest with you, I looked into it and saw it wasn’t filled with crap and I was like ‘blank canvas!’” the owner said.
Bennett got the boat in June, and despite the huge amount of work and the high costs of the restoration, they planned to stick with it and make the vessel a permanent home.
“My ultimate goal is to have housing security,” Bennett said. “I live in Strawberry Mansion and it is gentrifying very quickly.”
