Another familiar name is leaving Bensalem. On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina at Neshaminy Mall is shutting its doors as part of a nationwide closure of the Tex-Mex chain’s remaining U.S. locations, writes Ben Shapiro for Bucks County Courier Times.
The Bensalem outpost, tucked on a pad site just outside the mall, served as the chain’s last remaining Pennsylvania location. Employees learned of the closure during a staff meeting last week, when they were told the restaurant’s final week of operations had begun.
The closure is one more blow to an already-struggling Neshaminy Mall, where many storefronts have sat dark for nearly two years since the 91-acre property was sold to developers for $27.5 million.
The company shared a statement affirming its priority is taking care of workers: “Our immediate focus is on supporting our team members through this transition and ensuring an orderly and respectful closure.”
The end has been a long time coming. On The Border filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2025, weighed down by $25 million in debt.
Houston-based Pappas Restaurants swooped in to acquire the brand and announced a sweeping menu overhaul on May 1 as an effort to revive the chain.
However, individual locations began closing shortly after the relaunch until the decision was made to shutter all roughly 30 remaining U.S. locations.
Founded in 1982, On The Border grew to more than 150 locations across the U.S. and beyond. Despite the chain’s closure in Bucks County, locations that operate independently, including those in South Dakota, Florida, and Nevada, will remain open.
