Acme Markets is raising the bar—and the cheese selection—with the addition of new upscale food products at several Philly-area stores, writes Paul Schwedelson for Philadelphia Business Journal.
The supermarket chain is rolling out a premium product overhaul at three Greater Philadelphia locations, including its stores in Newtown and Doylestown. The upcoming changes are an effort to win back shoppers lured away by higher-end rivals like Whole Foods and Wegmans.
Rather than a one-size-fits-all refresh, Acme will study local shopping habits and preferences before deciding which products make the cut.
Company spokesperson Dana Ward put it plainly: the goal is shelves that reflect the people who shop them.
“We’re going store by store, neighborhood by neighborhood, and making sure we have the right products,” Ward said. “Starting with the stores that need a little bit more upscale products than our current assortment.”
New additions include artisan and imported cheeses, a wider organic selection, and specialty meat options aimed at shoppers who’ve been making the drive to competitors. Premium products would be layered in alongside existing inventory rather than replacing it.
The physical stores could also get a subtle renovation with refreshed lighting and updated décor, though Acme emphasized that locations will stay open throughout the transition.
