With the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers both in the midst of their respective second round playoff series, local retailers are seeing a boom in sales, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Lloyd Sixsmith Sporting Goods owner Ed Smith said sales at his Northeast Philadelphia store increased 20 percent in the past week.
Winning certainly helps matters.
“Fans really didn’t expect the Sixers to beat the Celtics or the Flyers to even be in the playoffs. It was kind of a late bloom in the season for both teams to make the playoffs, but we’re certainly getting increased sales with everybody from little kids to grandmoms jumping on the Sixers’ and Flyers’ bandwagon.”
This is the first time since 2000 that both the Sixers and Flyers each made it to the second round of the playoffs.
At Mitchell & Ness‘ flagship store in Center City, there’s been a glaring increase in sales of vintage Flyers apparel and the black Sixers jerseys that were brought back to this, according to the stores retail sales associate Carlos Delgado.
Meanwhile, Rally House in Center City has seen strong sales not only in jerseys, but also but shirts, pennants, sweaters, and many Gritty-related merchandise.
