Philadelphia Marks Official Start of 2026 Tourism Season With Third Annual Philly Opener

The 2026 tourism season will be the most historic, with a number of huge sporting events and others celebrating America's 250th birthday.

Philadelphia’s 2026 tourism season is now officially upon us — a year in which the city could see its largest influx of visitors ever.

During the third annual Philly Opener event at the Independence Visitor Center, CEO and President of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Kathryn Ott Lovell said this year’s work carries greater meaning.

“As we mark the semiquincentennial, our city is welcoming the nation and the world for a once-in-a-generation year of history, culture, sports, tourism, hospitality, and civic pride,” she said.

This year, efforts have been made to ensure that not only can visitors from near and far experience Philadelphia, but residents from all Philly neighborhoods can be a part of the festivities.

This includes activating and beautifying 20 commercial corridors, several block parties, free museum tours, the launch of the Phambassadors program, and much more.

“We understand that the real connection between a vibrant community and the well being of its residents, tourism plays a significant role in that connection,” said Dan Tropeano, segment president for Southeastern Pennsylvania at Highmark Blue Shield

This all feeds into supporting local businesses, showcasing the city’s rich history, and fostering pride in both the city and the nation overall.

Each year during the Philly Opener event, someone is awarded with the MVP — Most Valuable Philadelphian — Award for their impactful leadership and commitment to Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.

This year’s honoree is Governor Josh Shapiro, whose award was accepted by Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis

As he accepted the award on behalf of Gov. Shapiro, Davis touted the $40 million in investments the Commonwealth has made into events ranging from the World Cup and MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, to the PGA Championship in Newtown Square and NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, respectively.

“We’re coordinating at all levels of government to ensure folks are safe and have a great time here at our Commonwealth and we’re putting real resources into these events to make sure they are a success,” said Davis.

He added that while America celebrates its 250th birthday and Pennsylvania does the same, “Philly will be center stage for much of it, and the gateway to everything that’s happening in our Commonwealth.”

Anne Ryan, Deputy Secretary at the Pennsylvania Office of Tourism, shared a similar sentiment.

“As we look ahead to all of the big marquee events coming up in 2026, we need to remember that Philadelphia is not just a host city. It is the spark. It’s the moment that a visitor steps in and decides, ‘I want more of this,’” Ryan said. “The energy that you create here is what sends people to Pittsburgh, to the Pennsylvania wilds, to the Poconos, into every corner of our Commonwealth.”
