Doylestown Health Names New CEO as Penn Medicine Integration Continues

Doylestown Hospital, the centerpiece of Doylestown Health's campus in Bucks County, will have a new CEO on June 1 when Craig Gronczewski, a Doylestown native, takes the helm.

A major leadership move is reshaping Bucks County’s healthcare landscape.

Dr. Craig Gronczewski has been named the next CEO of Doylestown Health, stepping into the role on June 1, as reported by the Philadelphia Business Journal.

He succeeds Jim Brexler, who retired last week after steering Doylestown Health through one of the most consequential periods in its history, including its acquisition by Penn Medicine in April 2025.

That move shifted Doylestown Health from an independent community system into part of a larger academic network with greater resources and reach.

Gronczewski spent nearly 27 years at Penn Medicine Princeton Health, most recently as chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs.

He is a board-certified emergency medicine physician, but his background extends well beyond the clinical side. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on finance and management.

That combination of frontline medical experience and executive training is rare, and it appears to be exactly what Penn Medicine was looking for.

Penn Medicine leadership pointed to that balance as a key reason for his selection. “Dr. Gronczewski has demonstrated a strong commitment to quality, patient safety, and a collaborative leadership that drives lasting results,” said Kevin Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

“His deep roots within the Penn Medicine system, and his demonstrated ability to strengthen the connection between clinical teams and organizational strategy, make him exceptionally well-prepared to lead Doylestown Health forward.”

Gronczewski’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment. Doylestown Health is still in the early stages of integrating into Penn Medicine, with a focus on expanding services, strengthening specialty care, and keeping more patients local.
