What if a long, stressful journey to life-saving treatment could be replaced with a smooth ride through the sky?

Angel Flight East is based at Blue Bell’s Wings Field and connects those in need with a network of more than 400 volunteer pilots who want to help. The organization calls on these pilots to donate their time, aircraft, and fuel to fly patients to critical care.

Whether it’s a child traveling to a specialty hospital or an adult participating in a long-term clinical trial, the organization removes one of the biggest barriers to care: distance.

“There’s no cost to the passenger,” Executive Director Ellen Williams told American Community Journals. “And there’s no limit to the number of flights someone can take if they need ongoing treatment.” 

For many families, the service is life-changing. What might otherwise require hours of driving or repeated, expensive commercial flights becomes a streamlined, stress-free experience. Patients depart from small regional airports without the hurdles of commercial travel, and ground transportation is often arranged on the other end.

The impact extends beyond logistics. Volunteer pilots often bond with the people they fly, turning what could be a stressful journey into something deeply personal. “They call it ‘flying with purpose,’” said President Mark Haas, noting the shared sense of mission among pilots who give back through aviation. 

Angel Flight East serves a 14-state region, often partnering with similar organizations nationwide to ensure patients can reach destinations like the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota or Boston Children’s Hospital. The group also provides “compassion flights,” helping family members stay connected during extended medical treatments.

Marketing Director Caty Brzozowski emphasized the organization’s ongoing challenge: awareness. Many patients discover the service only after extensive searching or through hospital referrals.

For those who do, the experience can be overwhelming in the best way. Williams recalled patients moved to tears simply hearing they qualify.
