An unexpected tenant is taking over the kitchens at the Riegelsville fire station, where they’ll be packaging caviar and preparing blinis, writes Lacey Latch for the Bucks County Courier Times.
The fire station, which is part of Palisades Regional Fire Rescue, is leasing the kitchens to Milford-based Emesco Specialty Foods.
Peter Cox, president of the fire rescue outfit, said that the company’s presence won’t affect fire rescue activities. Some locals, however, are worried about the potential smell, traffic, and waste the business may bring.
Cox discussed that the fire company has had issues securing volunteers and revenue over the last few years, and fundraisers haven’t been raising the amount needed to cover the station’s costs.
Emesco’s lease could generate around $30,000 in annual revenue, according to Cox.
“At the end of the day, what this does by us renting the kitchen out is keeping the fire tax in Riegelsville Borough from increasing,” Cox said.
“If we cannot get someone in there to sublease this or and we cannot find another way to come up with money, it’s going to get passed on to the residents of the borough,” he continued.
Emesco owner Michael Seiff assured that the business will be taking precautions to prevent excess waste, wildlife scavenging in dumpsters, odor, and traffic.
