Montgomery County is taking another step toward renewable energy, joining neighboring counties in a regional push to expand solar power, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
County commissioners approved the advertisement of a request for proposals tied to a Sustainable Energy Partnership. This also includes Bucks, Chester and Delaware counties. The initiative aims to install rooftop and ground-mounted solar arrays at more than a dozen sites across the region.
Officials say the collaboration could deliver both environmental and financial benefits. Commissioner Jamila Winder described the effort as a step toward more sustainable energy use.
Vice Chairman Neil Makhija pointed to potential savings of up to $25 million over 11 years, along with more stable energy costs for residents.
Still, county leaders emphasized that the project remains in its early stages. The RFP does not commit Montgomery County to funding any proposals. Furthermore, each participating county would ultimately be responsible for its own installations. Commissioner Tom DiBello noted the importance of ensuring a strong return on investment before moving forward.
The proposal also comes as Montco continues exploring other energy initiatives, including a hydroelectric project at the Norristown Dam, which has sparked debate over costs.
