To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Bensalem’s Andalusia Historic House, Gardens & Arboretum has unveiled two new exhibits that will be on display until Nov. 13, writes Emily Neil for WHYY.
The “Revolutionary Family: The Biddles and American Independence” exhibit shares the stories of the Biddle family and their experiences during the Revolution.
“I think it’s important for people to understand that those less heroic tasks are an important part of history, as well,” said John Vick, the Andalusia Foundation’s executive director. “And then I think looking at the revolution through the lens of family dynamic can make it more engaging or more approachable.”
The Biddles purchased the property in 1814, and while many were in support of America’s independence, some remained loyal to the British.
The other exhibit displays artwork from Jody Graff and Sophie Glenn, whose work is part of The Clay Studio’s “Radical Americana” series.
Graff’s three quilts were created by pressing leaves, cutting them, and piecing them together to form a narrative story of the estate and its residents. The quilts were scanned and then printed onto the fabric, which will be hung by the tennis courts.
Glenn, a talented artist, metalworker, and furniture maker, has a special Philadelphia Eagles-inspired chair on display.
