Event in New Hope’s Logan Square Raises Awareness for Food Insecurity

Students, local police officers, and board members gathered for a competition in New Hope’s Logan Square to support local families in need.

The New Hope Borough Police Department, New Hope-Solebury School District, Solebury Township Police Department, and Fisherman’s Mark recently partnered for an event to raise food insecurity awareness, writes Jeff Werner for Patch

At the Giant grocery store located in Logan Square, teams from each group participated in a “Supermarket Sweep” challenge, supporting local families in need.

The competition focused on teaching about real-life budgeting, with donations going to Fisherman’s Mark.

Teams were given a set budget and a food insecurity scenario and then had to strategically shop to meet their household’s needs.

Students, officers, and Fisherman’s Mark board members competed against each other for a good cause.

Fisherman’s Mark board members were declared the winners, but all participants were commended for their efforts.

“This was an incredible opportunity for our students to better understand the realities some families face every day,” said Patrick Sasse, high school principal. “Through teamwork and friendly competition, they gained valuable insight into budgeting, empathy, and community service.”

Over $1,000 worth of groceries were collected in total to help families in need.

“This activity showed how much can be accomplished when schools, police, businesses, and nonprofits come together,” said Michael Downey, Giant store manager.
