There’s a $5 chicken sandwich deal right now at Wawa stores, so this is probably a good time to talk about where that chicken comes from.
Wawa has tried to raise the bar on typical convenience store food with expanded offerings that include custom-made sandwiches and hot food.
Those sandwiches are usually stuffed with quality big-name brands, writes Nick Pisano for Mashed.
For chicken, Wawa calls on Tyson and Perdue.
Which one you get depends on what you order. The breaded chicken strips come from Perdue. The crispy chicken patties are from Tyson.
The patties, regular and spicy, go into the chicken sandwiches. The strips come in groups of three or five in various entrees and snacks.
Sourcing with known brands means Wawa can save the hassle of setting up its own supply chain and production facilities.
It also guarantees a consistent level of quality from a known product. Tyson is the world’s second-largest chicken producer. Perduie is one of the largest in the United States.
The brands benefit by selling to a successful, high-volume commercial customer.
For the curious, Wawa’s mac and cheese comes from Stouffer’s, while the soup is supplied by Campbell’s.
