Eric Knight loves to tell stories.
Always has.
At 14, he was weaving stories about his family and his friends. Sometimes stories sprang solely from his imagination.
“They would always say, ‘Man, you tell a hell of a story, you should be a writer,” Knight recalled.
Now, with four self-published books under his belt, and more to come, the 55-year-old Lansdowne man, who writes under the pen name E.K. Powers, has fulfilled his fiction-writing destiny.
He’s a devotee of mysteries, thrillers, the supernatural, and sci-fi, reflected in his books Hidden Revenge (2008), To No Avail (2012), The Foliage (2023), and Shrouded Deceit (June 2025).
Knight’s stories draw on his own experiences and ambitions, but also contain dark themes, twisted plots, horror, and encounters with the supernatural.
Hidden Revenge, his first book, grew out of Knight’s love of playing sports, especially basketball, with dreams of one day playing in the NBA.
The story actually turns on a bullied boy who plots his revenge against a rising NBA star with a gender bait and switch.
People loved the book, Knight said.
In fact, he sold all 300 books that he brought to a book signing at a South Philadelphia Chickie and Pete’s.
“So I was very happy, very surprised. It was a good night,” he said.
His other stories have ancestral spirits helping to murder the living, a dead son haunting his father, government conspiracies, stolen IDs, and faceless bodies.
He’s also created some short horror films and written horror scripts.
“I always try to write something that no one else has ever written,” he said.
Knight writes whenever he can.
“And, you know, my plate is full, but I still have time to sit down and write,” he said. “I love creating characters and plots and twists, and I love to see reactions of people when they read my work,” he said. “So I find time to do it.”
His goal now is to find a literary agent or a publisher.
When he’s not writing, he’s working for an IT company in Philadelphia or spending time with his wife, Sheri, and their two grown daughters and a granddaughter.
Eric Knight was born and raised in North Philadelphia near the Tastykake factory. He lived in Ohio for about 11 years with his wife. They moved back to Philadelphia before buying a home in Lansdowne 30 years ago.
“We’ve been out here ever since,” he said.
He’s about 30 pages into his newest novel, which he promises will include Delaware County references and locales.
