WSJ: GSK CEO Emma Walmsley to Step Down; Luke Miels to Lead Pharma Giant

GSK CEO Emma Walmsley will step down in 2025, with Luke Miels taking over as the company refocuses on pipeline growth and Montco operations.

Pharmaceutical giant GSK is preparing for a major leadership change that will resonate globally and locally, reports Elena Vardon and Adrià Calatayud for The Wall Street Journal.

The London-based company, which has significant operations in Conshohocken, Upper Providence, and Upper Merion, announced that CEO Emma Walmsley will step down at the end of 2025. Chief Commercial Officer Luke Miels will succeed her.

Walmsley made history in 2017 as the first woman to lead a top-tier pharmaceutical company. She guided GSK through the COVID-19 pandemic, investor challenges from Elliott Management, and the spinoff of its consumer health division into Haleon.

Her tenure also saw increased investment in cancer therapies and specialty medicines, though shareholder confidence has wavered—GSK’s stock dropped about 11% during her time at the helm.

Miels, who joined from AstraZeneca in 2017, will officially take over on January 1. He has played a key role in building out GSK’s oncology and respiratory portfolios. He now faces the challenge of replenishing the pipeline as the company braces for the loss of U.S. patent protection on dolutegravir, its top-selling HIV drug, in 2028.

With GSK targeting more than $53.6 billion in sales by 2031, analysts say 2026 will be pivotal in charting the company’s next decade.
