West Chester-Based Verrica Gets Medication Approval in Japan, Triggering $10M Milestone Payment

Regulatory approval of Verrica Pharmaceuticals' Ycanth in Japan triggers $10 million milestone payment to the West Chester-based company.

The regulatory approval of Verrica Pharmaceuticals‘ Ycanth in Japan has triggered a $10 million milestone payment to the West Chester-based company by its overseas partner, Torii Pharmaceutical, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal

Verrica CEO Jayson Rieger said that the dermatology therapeutics company expects to receive the payment within the next several weeks and will use the funds to support Ycanth sales efforts in the United States.

Ycanth was approved by the FDA in 2023 for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum, a contagious skin infection that results in small, raised bumps.

The non-dilutive capital from the milestone payment will immediately strengthen Verrica’s balance sheet as the Chester County company works to establish Ycanth as the “new standard of care” for treatment of molluscum, said Rieger.

“We hope that this is the first of many other potential approvals for Ycanth around the world,” he added.

Verrica partnered with Torii in 2021, granting the Tokyo-based company exclusive rights to Ycanth in Japan. Verrica retained rights to the product for all indications for the rest of the world.
