Justine May’s Upper Darby home uses doors for decorations, has cigar boxes for wallpaper, and a grill bolted to the exterior of the second floor.
That and more earned it the title of “Ugliest Home in America” by HGTV, writes Stephanie Farr for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
HGTV host Retta and interior designer Alison Victoria showed up on May’s porch with a bullhorn to make the declaration.
May had not applied to be on the show and was in total shock when the HGTV personalities showed up to give her the dubious honor a year ago.
She took it well.
“Thank you so much,” she said. “I feel awesome. I’m really happy.”
Mays was obligated to keep her award a secret until the finale sixth season episode on HGTV’s “Ugliest House in America” aired on June 30.
Her prize was a $150,000 home makeover, and her house looks very different today. The focus now is on the color pink.
“It’s a lot and I love all of it,” Mays said. “I know it’s probably a little gaudy, but that’s what I was going for. I did get the ugliest house, and I am from Philly, so I’m a bit gaudy.”
