Help Protect Migrating Birds By Lowering or Turning Off Your Lights At Night

Doylestown, New Britain and Chalfont are encouraging residents to turn off or dim their outdoor lights at night to protect migrating birds.

Doylestown and several other nearby municipalities are encouraging locals to participate in the “Lights Out” initiative, writes Ed Doyle for TAPinto Doylestown.

Officials are urging residents to reduce the use of outdoor lighting or turn it off completely to help migrating birds. Officials are asking that this be done between 11 PM and 5 AM from now until Nov. 15 and again in the spring from April 1 to May 31.

These months mark key periods of bird migration across the country. From now until November, birds will fly south from Canada and the United States to find warmer environments.

Birds flying through the night rely on natural light sources to guide them. Artificial lights can result in disorientation, causing birds to veer off course and putting them in danger.

“By simply turning out the lights,” said the Doylestown Borough Facebook account, “you can help birds reach their southern destinations safely.”

Doylestown Township, New Britain Township and Doylestown Borough have passed ordinances that urge residents to limit and reduce their nighttime lights. Chalfont has also worked to raise awareness of the “Lights Out” initiative.
