Just Across the Delaware River, Frenchtown Is the Perfect Weekend Getaway

Just across the Delaware River, Frenchtown offers visitors an assortment of events, shops, and activities to explore.

Nestled along the scenic Delaware River, visiting Frenchtown, New Jersey, is the perfect weekend getaway destination that offers idyllic Americana vibes, writes Hannah Howard for Travel + Leisure.

The charming town hugs the historic D&R Canal towpath, stretching over 70 miles and attracting walkers, cyclists, and even the occasional horseback rider. During pleasant weather, tubers and kayakers can be seen enjoying the river, making this area an outdoor lover’s dream.

Frenchtown is also an arts and culture haven, home to a world-class experimental art center and an independent bookstore that regularly hosts renowned authors. The town even has a speakeasy hidden beneath the National Hotel, an 1851 landmark.

“Frenchtown snuck up on me,” said Jill Kearney, executive director of the town theater and art gallery, ArtYard. “But I discovered this remarkable convergence of urban refugees, longtime farmers, a vibrant queer community, and a human scale where you know the name of the cafe owner and pharmacist.”

Frenchtown has year-round events to enjoy, including the Mermaid Parade and the Aqualumina Festival.

The dining scene is equally as impressive, with options such as FinnBar, which serves affordable, farm-to-table, funky-yet-elegant dinners, and Conica del Sol, known for some of the region’s best Mexican food.
