Explore Wellington Square Bookshop, where rare books meet retro candy, deep conversations, and unexpected treasures around every corner.

Local, independent, and eccentric are all words used to describe the award-winning Wellington Square Bookshop in Exton, which has just earned itself another two accolades from The Philadelphia Inquirer

20 years ago, owner Sam Hankin was just trying find a space to house his hundreds of books. He never expected to being one of the number one independent bookstore in the region, drawing in hundreds of visitors per year to explore the wide collection of literature and trinkets.

Visitors are consistently struck by the shop’s whimsical, almost magical atmosphere, often comparing it to Diagon Alley or an M.C. Escher painting.

He even keeps a journal of memorable moments—like the time someone mistook the shop for a hair salon, or when he gifted a copy of War and Peace to a precocious 12-year-old. For Hankin, the bookshop isn’t about profit—it’s about people.

They host book clubs, author events, philosophical salons, and even photo shoots.

“We also have a salon where I meet with a group of intelligent patrons. We discuss AI, dystopias, human consciousness, fear, and the current political situation,” said Hankin.

Additionally, its eclectic café offers everything from coffee and cakes to retro candies and oddities like “evaporated water” and shelf-stable butter. Loyal staff are also an integral to the shop’s identity and culture.

Overall, the wealth of literature, people, and atmosphere are what makes Wellington stand out in the realm of book buying, earning itself two awards from The Philadelphia Inquirer’s list of 2025 Philly Favorites.

Philly Favorites is an annual competition by the publication focused on highlighting and supporting businesses in the Greater Philadelphia area. Viewers can nominate and vote so they can share their favorite places with everyone.

Wellington was named the No.1 spot for the category of shopping as the Best Bookstore. The next was the silver award for the Best Place to Buy a Gift.

Recently, it was voted as one of the best bookstores in the world by the publication Atlas Obscura.

Ultimately, Wellington Square Bookshop reflects his philosophy that life should be about learning, joy, and laughter—a legacy passed down from his mother. In every shelf, every event, and every quirky café offering, the shop is a testament to that belief and a haven for kindred spirits.
