Mary Lance-Smith, director of nursing operations at Bryn Mawr Hospital, keeps a sign in her office that sums up why she chose the profession: “I became a nurse because I was called to do this work,” writes Gina Lizzo for the Main Line Today.
Lance-Smith first became interested in nursing as a child, when she was a patient herself. Since then, she has earned associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees, and is now working toward her doctorate.
She began her career in the coronary care and telemetry units at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. In 1992, she made the move to Main Line Health, where she has remained ever since.
“It’s definitely a space where the voice of nursing is heard,” she said.
The Delaware County native is responsible for the 24-hour operation and supervision of several departments, including emergency units. But what brings her the most joy is seeing her fellow nurses thrive.
“It’s really rewarding to watch them grow as leaders and become their best selves in nursing,” she said. “I watch them go from novice to expert and even become leaders in the field.”
