The Bucks County Nurses Honor Guard is honoring National Nurses Week by offering solemn tributes to nurses both living and departed, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.
Founded in 2021 by Theresa Conejo, a veteran nurse, the group performs ceremonies that reflect the deep respect typically accorded to firefighters and military personnel.
Members, clad in traditional white uniforms and carrying a Nightingale lamp, perform rituals that acknowledge the dedicated service of their fellow nurses.
Conejo was inspired to start the honor guard after attending the funeral of a nurse mentor whose service to nursing was overlooked.
The Bensalem-based group has grown to 18 members, including active nurses from around Bucks and Montgomery counties.
Their efforts not only commemorate fallen nurses but also aim to heal and bring dignity back to the nursing profession, especially following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This initiative is part of a larger movement, with the National Nurses Honor Guard Coalition planning to spread awareness through a conference in Kentucky.
