Rosemont College to Join Villanova in Strategic Merger of Catholic Institutions

Villanova University will merge with Rosemont College by 2028, expanding its footprint and preserving Rosemont’s legacy.

Villanova University is set to welcome a new neighbor, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The school has struck a merger agreement with Rosemont College, a 104-year-old Catholic institution nestled just a mile away in Bryn Mawr. The process will unfold gradually, with Rosemont continuing to operate independently until 2027. After that, remaining students can transfer to Villanova, which will take over the 58-acre Rosemont campus in 2028.

Financial details weren’t disclosed, and the deal still needs regulatory approval. But Villanova President Rev. Peter M. Donohue said the schools’ Catholic roots, close proximity, and shared alumni connections made the merger a natural fit.

This marks Villanova’s second big acquisition, following last year’s takeover of Cabrini University’s campus. Like Cabrini, Rosemont has faced financial struggles, posting a $1.6 million loss in 2023. President Jim Cawley, who joined in 2022 to boost enrollment, said the merger secures Rosemont’s legacy.

Once merged, the Rosemont campus will be renamed “Villanova University, Rosemont Campus” and will maintain its chapel while serving as a residential and academic hub. The schools already share some classes, and Villanova says this move aligns with long-term strategic growth.
