Levittown, originally built as a community of starter homes for young couples, now has house prices that are unaffordable for most first-time buyers, writes JD Mullane for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Recently, a home in Levittown sold for a staggering $720,000. The price was so high that the average Levittowner would not be able to qualify for a mortgage.
The 1958 Country Clubber was purchased in November for the highest price ever paid for a William Levitt-built house in the town’s 72-year history.
“It’s a beautiful house, totally redone, with a ton of amenities,” said realtor Robin Kemmerer.
While the suburb was once known for sturdy, low-priced houses, today, a typically priced Levitt-built house is currently being priced at between $350,000 and $450,000.
To give an example, a house purchased for $400,000 with a 30-year fixed mortgage at 6.5 percent would need a 20 percent down payment of $90,000. The monthly payment would come out to around $3,000 a month.
“Who can afford that?” said Kemmerer.
In Levittown, with its median annual household income of $97,750, not many could.
