Chalfont Couple Follows Growing Trend, Begins Raising Backyard Chickens

Chalfont's Michael Demby and Jessica Musicus have started raising chickens at their Chalfont home, joining a growing trend across the Philadelphia region.

Michael Demby and Jessica Musicus recently started raising chickens at their Chalfont home, joining a growing trend across the Philadelphia region, writes Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.

The couple built a chicken coop last year in an effort to live more sustainably, especially after the price of a dozen eggs doubled compared to a year ago.

The hope is that the couple will be getting fresh eggs within the next month.

However, the project was not easy.

“We have a lot of predators in the area … raccoons, foxes,” said Jessica. “I could swear I even saw a bobcat at one point, so we wanted to make sure we got something that was really secure.”

The venture also proved to be costly.

According to Jessica, the cooper, run, and roof cost around $2,000.

That is before the expenses for the food, piping, and more.

Now, the couple is caring for their pets as they continue to grow their garden, turning it into a personal oasis that brings them closer to nature.

“I mean, I have chickens! My mother still can’t believe it,” said Michael. “It’s good when you get your hands in there and get grounded on the ground. We all need that.”
