Four Pennsylvania breweries are on the Brewers Association’s list of the largest craft brewing companies for 2024, writes Don Tse for Forbes.
The Brewers Association reported that craft breweries in the United States produced four percent less beer in 2024 compared to the previous year. However, price adjustments increased the retail value of craft beer by three percent, reaching $28.9 billion.
The report also showed that many craft breweries have shifted toward hospitality-focused business models, selling most of their beer in brewery-owned taprooms and restaurants. Although this approach has reduced overall sales volume, it increased employment in the craft brewing sector by three percent last year.
Additionally, this is the first time since 2005 that the number of operating craft breweries nationwide declined, from 9,747 in 2023 to 9,612 in 2024.
Still, the latest list of the 50 largest craft breweries, including eight newcomers this year, shows that craft breweries are increasing.
D. G. Yuengling and Son in Pottsville topped the list as the largest craft brewery in the country. Tröegs Brewing in Hershey ranked No. 20, followed by Pittsburgh Brewing at No. 25. New Trail Brewing Company in Williamsport came in at No. 46.
