Karen Cleaver had thought about downsizing with her husband for years as they got older, writes Michaelle Bond for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
She decided to make the move after he died, though she was still not in a rush to get rid of her things.
“I just took my time and used Facebook Marketplace and the Nextdoor app and just kept selling and selling,” she said.
She needed to clear out a lot of furniture as the younger generations “don’t want this beautiful, carved Mediterranean stuff. You know, they want Ikea.”
The furniture ended up with the family of a cleaner who helped Cleaver during her move.
After a lot of procrastinating, she met a real estate agent who “knew by talking to me that he had to give me a little shove, like the [Eagles’] Tush Push.”
He told her she had three weeks to prepare for an open house, and it worked.
“By having that time limit, I had that place cleaned out, everything gone,” she said. “The most important thing was to set time limits. I never thought I could do it in three weeks, but I did.”
