The Union League of Philadelphia is experiencing unprecedented growth, marking its most significant expansion in the last decade and more of its 160-year history, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The exclusive members-only private club, long a haunt for top business leaders in the region, launched its expansion in 2014 with the opening of its first satellite location, The Bungalow for dining in Stone Harbor. The following year, the Union acquired the Torresdale-Frankford Country Club in Northeast Philadelphia, rebranding it as The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale.
In 2017, the club purchased the Guard House in Gladwyne, expanding its footprint with a dining presence on the affluent Main Line. Next, in 2018, came the Sand Barrens Golf Club near Avalon, marking its entrance into the Jersey Shore. The Union then began a nearly five-year, extensive renovation of the course.
The Union purchased the Ace Club in Lafayette Hill in 2021, renaming the 311-acre, Gary Player-designed club Union League Liberty Hill.
In this latest move, the 4,000-member club is further expanding its Jersey Shore footprint with the pending acquisition of the Whitebrier, the popular Avalon establishment.
This, however, may just be the start.
