Forever 21 is set to join the growing list of retail stores that have been closing both in the region and nationwide.
The retail apparel brand recently announced the likelihood of closing all of its Pennsylvania stores, including two in Philadelphia, writes Ariana Perez-Castells for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The news comes as the retailer searches for a buyer.
“These closures are necessary because economic realities require the company to restructure its business operations,” chief financial officer Bradley Sell said in a February 17 notice filed with the Philadelphia Department of Commerce.
The two Philadelphia locations set to close are in the Fashion District and Franklin Mall, respectively. As a result, 36 total employees will unfortunately be laid off between April 23 and May 7.
Forever 21 currently has 17 stores in Pennsylvania, all of which are also anticipating closures.
Amid its search for a buyer, Forever 21 is also considering filing for bankruptcy. This is according to the Wall Street Journal.
It previously filed for bankruptcy in 2019 before being acquired by Simon Property Group, Brookfield Property Partners, and Authentic Brands Group the following year.
