Wawa Closes Out 60th Anniversary Year with a Reopening Party

Wawa closed out its 60th anniversary year Dec. 20 with a party.

The location was in Ridley Township, the town that hosted the first Wawa store, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

Confetti flew while a group of people and mascots held a ribbon cutting, reopening a store at Bullens Lane and McDade Blvd., less than a mile from the original Wawa in Folsom.

The celebration had a photo booth, a decorated 1918 Wawa antique milk truck, the Philadelphia Eagles’ drumline and mascot Swoop, TV Personality Joey Graziadei, a dance party with the Philadelphia Eagles Cheer Team and Wally the Goose.

Wawa has 42 stores in Delaware County, six of them in Ridley Township.

The No. 1 convenience store in America based on customer satisfaction now has Wawa stores in eight states, with plans to open stores in the Midwest next year. 

About 48,000 people are working for Wawa, with each store employing 35 to 45 people. The average store sees 13,000 customers a week.  

“It’s a busy place. It’s a busy staff,” said company President Brian Schaller. “It’s 24 hours. We don’t close our doors.”
