Susan Barnhart, a longtime former postal worker who passed away last year, will have a post office she worked at named after her.

Longtime postal employee Susan Barnhart, who perished alongside six others in an Upper Makefield flash flood over a year ago, will have the Washington Crossing Post Office named after her, writes JD Mullane for the Bucks County Courier Times.

U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick first introduced a bill in Congress to rename the office last year.

The U.S. Senate passed the legislation last week and the bill was sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

This is not only a memorial of Susan’s death but a fond remembrance of her boundless passion and energy for life,” said Susan’s sister, Lynda Barnhart, in a news release from Fitzpatrick’s office.

Barnhart worked worked at the post office for several years before her death on July 15, 2023. She became trapped on Route 532/Washington Crossing Road with other motorists when heavy rain dropped some nine inches of water on the area within just an hour.

Barnhart loved her job.

“Susan’s joy was helping others, always with a warm smile, and she left a lasting impression on everyone she met,” Lynda Barnhart added. “She was devoted to her work at the Post Office and genuinely cared for her customers and co-workers—it was never just a job to her, and she consistently went above and beyond to help others.”
