Upper Makefield is leading the effort to add the Washington Crossing Bridge to the National Register of Historic Places, according to a staff report from NewtownPANow.

The discussion over granting the bridge historic status comes ahead of talks about a potential rehabilitation or reconstruction of the 119-year-old bridge connecting the Washington Crossing section of Upper Makefield Township and Mercer County, New Jersey.

According to Supervisor Chairperson Yvette Taylor, the township and officials were flooded with comments on the bridge from residents.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission confirmed in February that it was considering a potential revamp of the toll-supported bridge.

In response, the supervisors adopted a resolution last month in which they insisted regular updates be provided by the commission on the proposed rebuild of the bridge.

The detailed, five-page resolution expressed concerns over how the serene and historic character of Washington Crossing would be impacted by a modern replacement.

The resolution also raised questions regarding environmental issues that could arise due to the construction of a new bridge.
