Delaware River Nominated for Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year
The Delaware River has been nominated as a contender for Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year award, to celebrate its historical significance and natural beauty, writes Colleen McDonough for POWR.
This year’s nominees, announced by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, also include the Youghiogheny River and Perkiomen Creek.
“These three rivers are remarkable examples of Pennsylvania’s rich natural heritage,” said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “This competition not only highlights their unique qualities but also builds community pride and emphasizes their recreational, cultural, and economic importance. I can’t wait to see which waterway earns the 2025 title.”
The Delaware River is the longest undammed river in the Eastern United States. It forms part of Pennsylvania’s border with New York and New Jersey.
The public can vote for the river of the year on the POWR website through January 24. Individuals can vote once per email address.
The organization behind the winning river will receive a $10,000 DCNR grant to host year-long celebrations, including paddling events, educational programs, and community activities. Additionally, the 2025 River of the Year will be commemorated with a special poster honoring its achievement.
