The Bensalem School Board will vote on the future of Rush Elementary on Tuesday, reports Lacey Latch for Bucks County Courier Times.
The decision follows contentious discussions about four proposed plans, ranging from building a new $150 million middle school to general renovations. Most options involve closing Benjamin Rush Elementary, a move opposed by many citing overcrowding and community reliance on walkability.
“We’re running out of space in our elementaries,” said board director Stephanie Gonzalez Ferrandez.
A district survey collected 999 responses but failed to identify a preferred plan. Dissatisfied parents like Kelly Rafferty created their own survey, revealing an even split between building a new school and renovating the existing ones.
“If we as a community can help answer what they need… I’m happy to spend a little bit of time and money to do that for my kids,” Rafferty said.
Justin Ellis, a Rush Elementary teacher and Bensalem parent, urged the board to prioritize community input and consider alternatives that address overcrowding.
“There’s a way for the whole community to win,” Ellis said.
