After 40 Years, Dominic’s Shoe Repair in Bensalem Faces Uncertain Future
Dominic’s Shoe Repair, a fixture in Bensalem for nearly 40 years, now faces an uncertain future, writes JD Mullane for Bucks County Courier Times.
Dominic Mormando, 83, who has spent more than half a century perfecting his craft as one of Bucks County’s last old-time shoemakers, may have to close his beloved shop due to a rent dispute with the landlord.
Mormando feels limited in what he can do to secure his shop’s future despite an online petition of support from loyal customers spanning from Virginia to upstate Pennsylvania. “Landlords – they’re gonna do what they want. It’s their property,” he noted. He is on a month-to-month lease.
Mormando remains committed to his work, surrounded by vintage equipment and shelves stocked with leather care products. Yet, the November 30 deadline looms, threatening to bring an end to the shop that has been central to his life and livelihood.
“I could retire. I’m 83 years old,” he said, acknowledging his age but also expressing his hope to keep going. “If I can find a place local, and the rent’s affordable, I’d like to work another three, four, five years. I’m in good health. I like to work. And it’s good work.”
For now, the fate of Dominic’s Shoe Repair hangs in the balance.
